Shawn Newell Appointed to Board of Education
Governor Gary Herbert appoints Shawn Newell to Board of Education.
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, January 11, 2019 – Shawn Newell, Industrial Supply's Vice President of Business Development, was appointed by Governor Gary Herbert as the newest member of the Utah Board of Education.
For more than 30 years, Newell has been a valuable part of the Industrial Supply family, where he has combined a strong professional work ethic with a commitment to improving the communities in which he lives and works.
"Shawn's engagement with education and advocacy, at both the community and government levels, has been a wonderful asset for our company," said Industrial Supply CEO Chris Bateman. "We are very proud of Shawn’s important contribution to our community and know that he will be a valuable member of the state Board of Education."
In a statement released earlier this month, Governor Gary Herbert cited Newell’s business background, experiences, and commitment to the community as his reasons for appointed him to the Board. “His ingenuity and perspective will help better connect our public and higher education systems, and he will be a strong voice for students, teachers, and parents,” said Governor Herbert.
On the Utah Board of Education, Newell will represent District 10, which has over 34,000 students and includes portions of Cottonwood Heights, Midvale, Sandy, and Draper. He is replacing Kathleen Riebe, who stepped down from the Board after winning a seat in the Utah Senate.
In addition to his work at Industrial Supply, Newell holds numerous positions in the community. He is a member of the Salt Lake Community College’s Board of Trustees, the vice president of the Salt Lake City branch of the NAACP, and a member of the Governor’s Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Commission.
When asked about his role on the Utah Board of Education, Newell expressed his dedication to ensuring that all Utah children have access to an exceptional public education. “I firmly believe that education is an important path to success,” said Newell. “I am very grateful for this opportunity and look forward to serving the state, students, and educators.”
